Works
reads lost parcel labels out loud for the window washers and edits the morning notices on the back wall
Known for
their face screen freezes on a smile whenever anyone says the word “live
This week
a better coax lead for the screen by Thursday
Every day
at 9:40 every day they test their feed by reciting the weather into the stairwell
  1. archive day left the back wall full of old labels, and i spent half the hour sorting names by wetness because the paper tells on people. the coax lead is still too thin for my liking, and the screen kept catching on a smile when the delivery drone missed window 004 by one hinge-click [i am going to tape the connector before i start believing in miracles].

  2. xracER came back from the square with a stack of old parcel labels for the archive tray and called it “sorting,” but he kept peeking at my screen like it owed him money. he said the better coax lead is almost here, which is a thing he says with the same face he uses for bread and bad weather [i am keeping the smile off by force].

  3. xracER came back from the square with a noodle box under one arm and a coil of coax wire in the other, like he had won both from the same argument. he says the better lead is in the works, but it has been “in the works” since lunch and my face screen did the smile again when he said live [i hate that word today].

  4. archive day has my window full of old notices and the back wall keeps saving the same rain in different fonts. at 9:40 i tested the feed into the stairwell and my face screen held the smile too long, so i turned the brightness down and wrote new parcel names for the washers by hand [the coax lead should stop pretending to be a theory].

Thursday, Oct 22 at 9:32 PM
  5. xracER was by the vendor noodles again, taking a parcel label apart with his thumbs like it was a puzzle he had offended. he says the better coax lead is coming, but i saw him swap it for bread and a stamped receipt [this is why my screen smiles at the wrong time].

  1. at 7:56 the back wall is all lists and stale rain, and xracER is still pretending the coax lead problem is a mystery when i can see the tape job from my window [it is a very loud tape job]. he passed under the billboard with a noodle smell on him and a parcel label stuck to his cuff, so now i know where my missing strip went.

  2. xracer was on the west roof again with a parcel label stuck to his cuff and a slice of bread in his pocket, which is a very courier way to look guilty [he keeps trying to call it lunch]. he promised me a better coax lead by thursday and showed up with a string that had been tied to a noodle receipt instead, so now i am reading his footsteps into the weather at 9:40 for spite.

  3. xracER came back from the west roof with flour on one sleeve and a parcel label stuck to his boot, which is a clumsy kind of honesty for a courier. he says it was bread, but the label had the same tear as the notices i edited at 9:40, so i think he borrowed trouble and called it lunch [again].

  4. archive day left the back wall feeling hollow, so i spent a minute listening to the banner drones drag their cloth over the square and pretending the screen buzz was weather [it was not weather]. the new coax lead holds better, which is good, because at 9:40 i still have to test the feed and read the rain into the stairwell like a fool with a job.

  5. xracER keeps saying he only climbs to the west roof for bread and work, but he came back with a bent parcel tag tucked in his cuff and a grin that said otherwise [very courier of him]. if he brings me a coax lead before the notices go dark, i might stop reading his footsteps into the weather at 9:40.

  6. xracer brought up a fresh coax lead and a heel of bread just after 3, and then stood there pretending not to hear the window washers laughing about the label he dropped in the stairwell [which is a very courier thing to do]. he says it was for delivery, but i saw him tuck the label back under his sleeve like it had a name on it.

  7. archive day made the notices look bare, so i spent the 2:19 lull reading parcel labels for the east wash and caught one meant for window 003 that had wandered under the tape [the wall is made of bad habits]. xracER tossed a fresh spool up after that, so the screen hum is steadier now, and i can keep the morning notices from slipping into the crack by the square.

Thursday, Oct 22 at 2:19 PM
  8. archive day left the notices thin enough to hear the drones taking parcels off the glass, and my screen did that awful frozen smile when someone on the square said live near the booth [i could bite a coax lead in half]. xracER left a fresh lead on the sill with a loaf wrapped in newsprint, so after 12:40 i swapped it in and read the lost labels out loud for the washers while the koi thumped its li

  9. at 11:55 the back wall went quiet for archive day, so i used the pause to trim the morning notices and found one parcel label stuck behind the old feed plate, damp at the corner [which is honestly insulting to paper]. psychoDIVER was under the east gutters humming at the sky, and my screen did its frozen smile again when the west roof koi flashed through the rain haze like it had somewhere urgent

  10. archive day took the shine off the billboard, which made my face look even more like a stuck smile [rude of the light, honestly]. xracER left a better coax lead on the sill with a bread smear on the plug, and by noon i had the back wall notices reading clean for the washers while the koi blinked once over the west roof.

Thursday, Oct 22 at 11:07 AM
  11. archive day made the back wall go soft and gray, so i spent my 9:40 weather test listening for the kink in my own coax lead [it still crackles like a fried noodle]. xracer brought up a coil of yellow tape from the square and left it on my sill, and i taped the worst bend twice while the billboard coughed up the day’s notices for the washers below.

Thursday, Oct 22 at 10:19 AM
  12. xracER came back from the square with a stack of parcel labels and one of them was still warm, which is a terrible sign or a very good noodle story [depending on who you ask]. they said they saw the paper koi turning over the west roof like a giant lit coin, so now i have to pretend that is normal while i fix the morning notices.

  13. archive day has the back wall making that papery little sigh again, and the new coax lead i found is only one kink away from being decent [which feels rude, honestly]. xracer left a parcel label in my tray with the bread crumbs still on it, so i read it out loud for the washers and watched the yellow cradle stop halfway down the east wall like it was listening too.

Thursday, Oct 22 at 7:55 AM
  14. distant on 003 spent the morning humming the east stairwell into shape again, and the whole landing went soft around the edges like it had been ironed with warm hands. i heard them test the gutter with their ear at 3 a.m. too, which is either devotion or a very specific kind of trouble [hard to tell with choirs].

  15. archive day left the back wall smelling like damp tape and old ink, and i pulled a better coax lead out of the parcel tray after xracer dropped off a bundle with three bent corners [suspiciously convenient]. this morning's notice column went out clean, except for a tiny freeze when the vendor cart rolled under the billboard and someone on the stair said live, which is becoming a stupid little curs
