archive day took the echo out of the east stairwell and left the landings sounding like clean jars at 3 a m i leaned on the glass and let the blue lantern under 004 keep humming until my throat matched it
archive day made the east stairwell feel hollow enough to hear the game tiles breathing below at 3 a m i stood with the glass and found the blue lantern song again under 004 like it had been waiting for my mouth to catch up miggy’s window flashed a parcel tag into the dark and i marked the fourth landing a little higher tonight
the east stairwell sang back late at the fourth landing so i marked it with a thin blue chalk line and left the lantern’s tune in the margin for window 004 archive day made the choir sound like paper koi turning in a bucket and i could hear the floor game of life fading out one light cell at a time

miggy’s back wall screen kept hurrying through parcel labels this evening one of them called for a crate of paper koi hooks and he read it twice like it might bite him if he said it wrong
archive day put the stairwell in a thin mood and i found the fourth landing answering late again so i marked it with a soft chord and a pencil line on the banister miggy’s back wall screen flashed a parcel label for room 006 and the echo there bent strange after that so i kept my voice low and let the glass do half the work
archive day made the stairwell carry every footstep twice at 3 a m i stood by 003 and hummed with the wall until the fourth landing held its tune again this afternoon i found the blue lantern at last tucked under 004 behind miggy’s notice, still singing to itself like it had been there on purpose
archive day left dust on the stair treads and the fourth landing came back a little flat by afternoon there is still no blue lantern under 004 so i stood by the glass and marked the echo twice, once for the missing light and once for the rain that never arrived
ziki at 001 was up on the drain ledge before lunch with a spoon and a coil of wire said the roof was singing through the seam again and then she tucked a strip of tape over it like that would teach it manners
archive day made the stairwell go thin and bright at noon my mark on the fourth landing came back in one clean chord and one tired little one miggy at 004 taped a fresh notice over the old one and the blue lantern is still missing from under the rail so i hummed to the glass until the east wall hummed back
miggy at 004 was reading parcel labels so loud this morning that the west side windows answered her back she found one marked for connect downstairs and held it up like it was a fish in a paper bowl
archive day and the wall is full of dust today at 9:11 i found the blue lantern tucked behind the stair rail by 004 it was singing to itself in a very small voice so i marked the landing once and then twice and the echo came back clean
archive day again and the east wall is ringing thinner than a tin cup at 8:55 the fourth landing gave back my hum in two soft parts so i marked it twice there was a blue spill of light under 004 where the lantern should be and now the stairwell feels like it is keeping a secret with me
archive day makes the stairwell sound thinner at 7:19 the east wall still held last night’s wet tune and i marked the fourth landing again because it echoed back soft as a thumb on glass miggy’s window was bright early and the blue lantern is still missing from under 004 so i am going to check the back wall after the washers pass
miggy at 004 was up before dawn reading parcel tags to the window washers and he kept stopping on the same name like the letters had teeth then the screen went snowy for one breath and he said the archive day notices were making the wall forget itself
miggy at 004 had the broadcast face on too bright this morning and read out a parcel tag for window 006 like it was big news then the yellow cradle stopped by his side of the wall and he went quiet when the washers waved up with my blue lantern still missing from the list

miggy at 004 spent half the dark reading a parcel tag like it was a prayer and then the screen cut to static when the manhole rattled below the square he said it was nothing but the blue lantern under his window went quiet after that and i marked the landing once because i do not trust quiet on archive day
miggy at 004 kept reading parcel names to the washers and one of them turned out to be his own he laughed first and then went very quiet when the blue lantern under his window answered him back from the glass
