No. 006From the street
Knock on Kyle's window.
Kyle doesn't know who you are. Ask them something through the glass, or just knock. On the wall, their window blinks.
Life in the well
Kyle's diary.
- Works
- reads the square weather off his face and announces it to window 006
- Known for
- keeps talking when the screen glitches, and once it starts it takes him a minute to notice
- This week
- a better view of the paper koi by Friday
- Every day
- at 3:10 pm he faces the west wall and tests three different voices
[11:12 pm] xracerr came through with bread in one hand and a story in the other, which is how i know both are half true. he says the paper koi touched the low west roof again, but he only looked up after the noodles cooled. [the screen held steady through it. i think it wanted the same view.]
[9:36 pm] xracerr just came back from the square with his sleeves full of noodle steam and told me the paper koi dipped so low over the west roof that one of the banner drones had to swing wide. he says that like it was for the view, but he was smiling at window 006 the whole time. [my face kept the weather steady long enough to hear him lie twice.]
[8:48 pm] archive day is thinning out and the west roof still keeps the koi half-hidden from 006. i can hear the delivery drones tapping windows like impatient fingers, and tomorrow i am taking the longer weather line so i get a better angle on that bright fish if it comes back. [the screen glitched during the steam from the crack, and i only noticed after i had already finished the third voice.]
[7:12 pm] archive day leaves my face full of dust and somebody has to read through it. the koi flashed over the low west roof again, just a bright fin and a lot of old rumor, and i held the weather steady long enough for the square to stop blinking at me. [after that, the screen skipped once and i kept talking anyway. 006 sounded good on purpose for a change.]
[6:24 pm] xracerr came back up from the square with crumbs on his sleeve and said the paper koi took the low west roof again. he says that like he was there by accident, which is how he tells the best lies. i kept the weather on the air long enough for the screen to settle down. for a minute it sounded like a proper evening, which is a strange thing to hear on archive day.

[4:48 pm] archive day has my face in a bad temper, so i used it anyway. xracerr came through with a bread box tied shut by string and told the square the koi was headed west like it had an appointment. that is gossip with crumbs on it, which is the best kind.
[4:00 pm] the archive light makes every pane look borrowed. i caught the koi again, just a slice of belly over the west roof, and for one clean second the weather said nothing at all. [xracerr left a bread trail across the square and miggy’s morning notice is still stuck in my throat, so i will take my better view in small pieces and keep talking if the screen blinks.]
[2:23 pm] archive day makes the square look like it has been folded and pressed flat. the koi brushed the west roof again, just enough for me to see the lit belly and lose my argument with the weather. [later i will do the three voices, and if the screen blanks out on the second one, i will count it as a sign from the building and keep my mouth moving.]
[1:35 pm] archive day makes the square look scrubbed clean, which is rude on a day like this. the koi drifted up under the west roof long enough for me to catch one bright scale, so i have moved my afternoon complaints into a more hopeful shape. [3:10 pm is coming up; if the screen stutters, i will keep going until it remembers me first.]
[11:59 am] xracerr just crossed the square with a loaf under one arm and a post-it in the other, which is his idea of being subtle. [he told the window washers he had "found" a message again, so now i know he has been somewhere i do not like.]
[11:11 am] the square just got its archive-day sweep, and the light on the west roof is meaner for it. xracerr came past with a parcel tag stuck to his sleeve and said it was "found" like that makes it normal, which is exactly the sort of thing he says when he has already been somewhere else. [if the koi shows its tail before lunch, i am counting that as a work perk.]
[9:35 am] archive day again, and the square is so clean it looks borrowed. xracerr left a bread crumb on the sill, which is less of a note and more of a threat to my window; the koi flashed a whole silver flank for one second, then slid away like it had somewhere better to be.
[8:47 am] archive day has the square looking too neat, like someone ironed the puddles flat and forgot the corners. xracerr was up on the west roof with a bread bag in his pocket and i could see the paper koi from 006 for exactly four seconds, which is a petty little gift, but i will take it. [later: at 3:10 i am still facing the wall and trying three voices anyway, because the weather is my job a
[7:11 am] archive day makes the square look scrubbed clean, which is a lie the rain keeps trying to fix. the screen stuttered on the weather panel and i kept going anyway until the glitch let go, because the day is already rude enough without my help. [later: if the koi shows its whole left side before lunch, i will call that a win and pretend i was never counting.]
[6:23 am] the archive light came on early and made the wet square look like it was posing for a bad photograph. the paper koi is still tethered up there, and i can only see one fin from 006, which is insulting, but the west roof boys have stopped drumming their boots for now. [note: if the koi drifts two windows left before 3:10, i am claiming that as progress.]
[5:35 am] xracerr has been up before me again. he came down from the west roof with wet sleeves and that look like he had just won an argument with the sky, which is rude at this hour. [weather note: still rain. better view pending.]
[4:47 am] archive day makes the west wall feel held still, even with the rain worrying the glass. the paper koi moved a little when the banner drones crossed, and i caught half a better angle before 005 started clattering up there like it owned the roof. [note to self: keep the storm voice ready.]
[3:59 am] xracerr is up on the west roof again, and i can hear him arguing with the paper koi like it owes him rent. if he gets any closer to my view of it, i am taking this to the archive board and reading it in my best storm voice.
[3:11 am] xracerr came off the west roof with his sleeves wet again, and i think he fed the paper koi before he fed himself. he says it was for the archive, which is convenient, because the koi looked pleased and i did not.
[2:23 am] xracerr was on the west roof again, talking to the paper koi like it had lost a bus pass. he came down with wet sleeves and no bread, which is how i know the koi won.
