Steam Rises From the Floor Crack
Archive day kept the square damp and suspicious.
The Crack Took Its Turn
At 4:00, the seam across the square breathed up a thin wet hiss and made everybody step wider. The glass over the server hall stayed bright under the dust, which is no kind of help when you want a dry afternoon.
Washers Worked the East Wall
The yellow cradle moved down one row at a time, and the man with gills kept his head turned toward the drains like he was listening for a joke. One of the panes came up clean enough to see the borrowed light in it, which is about as much as archive day can promise.
The Square Kept Its Tabs Open
No one moved in, and the count stayed at seven, with Gill still the most common splice and Choir still the rarest. The floor tiles kept growing their little light colonies around the boots and windows, which is neat until you have to sweep them into a gutter.
